EBC Redstuff Brake Pads (FRONT) - Volkswagen Golf R MK7/MK8
EBC Redstuff brake pads now come in two series. The first is the 3000 series which is EBC’s flagship street brake pad material for prestige and faster cars...setting new standards in braking performance.
The other is the 9000 series and was once orange in colour. These are also known as the extra duty ED+ brake pads and are the most cost-effective way to boost your truck or SUV Brakes. ED+ is all about… more friction, more heat capability, longer life.
EBC Redstuff 3000 Series features:
Redstuff is the EBC premium low dust brake pad for fast street driving on all types of cars. Redstuff brake pads feature an Aramid fiber Ceramic particle enhanced premium brake material. EBC do NOT use Ceramic fibers in any of their pads. Red is copper-free for environmental legislation, also free of sulphides or lead and a low dust material, and fully ECE R90 brake safety tested and approved.
There is always “Some:” dust from brakes as they wear but the major advantage of the EBC range is that they use zero steel fiber in their pads and instead use less aggressive aramid fibers such as Twaron® and Kevlar® which are easy to wash off wheels and do not etch into wheel lacquers or alloy.
EBC Redstuff is also a long-wearing pad and as such takes approx 500Kms to fully bed down and show its full performance. To assist the bed-in, however, all EBC pads are surface coated with our Brake-in ™ pad brake in accelerator compound.
Being a hard wearing pad, bed-in times can be as long as 1000 miles and drivers must be patient until the pad takes up the shape of their disc (brake rotor). This is a truly impressive fast road pad for repeated heavy braking.
emits far less dust than semi-metallic pads and has been proven to stop a passenger car/sedan/sport compact/hot hatch 13 metres quicker than OEM pads from 100mph/160kph. Features EBC Brake-In surface coating which conditions rotor surface and accelerates pad bed-in. Nominal friction coefficient 0.5 with approx. 50% dust reduction. Most EBC Red Ceramic pads are approved to ECE R90 brake safety regulation.
High Performance lowest dust rating pads for Prestige imports and faster street driving. There are two reasons our customers love Redstuff, First because they are the lowest dust pad we have encountered by reducing dust by 60-90%. Plus the minimal dust you see is very easily removed with a simple sponge wash as it contains no steel fibre particles as in all other pads. Second they brake like an alligator right from cold (as good as original pads or better) and just get better as they heat up. This material is a aramid fibre based brake compound enhanced with ceramic particles. If you have previously tried EBC Redstuff (pre-ceramic compound) this material is light years ahead. It lasts longer, it brakes better and is quieter.
High friction formula improves brake effect 15%.Redstuff ceramic brake pads have always been known for its low dust ability but the latest blend has greatly reduced the phenomenon of pad “Pick up” or disc scoring and reduced dust even further. Tested at the UK Motor Industries Research Association (MIRA) in witnessed tests early Redstuff reduced car stopping distance in tests by almost 50 feet from 100 MPH offering a staggering 30% brake improvement.
Brake Pad Features:
- Redstuff ceramic brake pads, passenger car/saloon car pad NOT made for Truck or SUV fitments
- EBC lowest dust fast street pad with 15% brake improvement
- Capable of repeated heavy brake use without brake “Fall-Off”
- Very minimal disc/rotor damage characteristics
- Superb material for Prestige imports/European and Asian cars
- ECE R 90 type approved for most cars
- Features red “brake in’ surface coating for instant safe braking after install
- Made with Nucap NRS hooks on backplates to totally eliminate the chance of pad debond
EBC Redstuff 9000 Series/Extra Duty ED+ Features:
Made 100% in the UK EBC Brakes factory from aramid fibers and a tiny amount of steel fiber the ED+ range is also kinder to rotors and dusting is minimal. EBC are moving their technology forward as new materials come into view, there was and is nothing wrong with the orange previous grade… this one is just a tad better and here's why.
Trucks using large outside diameter tyres pose a problem for brake systems as follows (this is not a criticism of the excellent work that vehicle manufactures do – it’s just an explanation of what happens with larger off-road tyres on a truck)
The first problem is a thermal or kinetic energy issue on a heavy 2.3T high powered truck with 700BHP+ where the heat of braking needs to be handled, pads get hotter so a high fade resistance – high stability pad needed (that’s why the graph below shows a test at 400C/750F not lower ) Let’s choose two vehicles, a Gen 6 Mustang and the TRX both with 380mm rotors, or the Raptor with its 350mm rotors. The tyre rolling radius on the Mustang is 13.5” and on the TRX it is 17.3″, that’s a huge 30% increase in rolling radius, and on the Raptor the tyre rolling radius is 16.5” which is a 22% increase over the Mustang. The final issue is a spongy brake pedal that can occur during heavy deceleration as the caliper has to do more work because of the larger tyre diameters. The solution to all is a higher friction pad, reducing the need for higher pedal or caliper pressures.
The new carbon granule based EXTRA DUTY material is also extremely rotor friendly, minimal in dust and noiseless and each set is supplied with revolutionary NUCAP piston insert shims, another first from EBC.
Brake Pad Features:
- British made top quality product - new Red paint finish identifies the new grade AF 903/09
- Backing plate steels feature NUCAP NRS system hook technology for 5 times the bond strength of conventional pads
- After bedding ( up to 600-800 miles ) pads are silent
- New dual slot and chamfer pattern to reduce noise and improve de-gassing.
- Fade-free brake material capable of a wide range of operational temperatures
- Pads should be allowed to seat to your discs/rotors with normal urban driving and then after 600-800 miles follow this by 15 medium to heavy brake applications to complete the bed-in and surface cure process.
- More brake grip than stock and most low-cost aftermarket pads at less cost than original parts
- Longer life than any other pad we have ever made and we think, longer life than anything else out there in the aftermarket, including stock pads
- Features red brake in surface coating for instant safe braking after install
How to Bed-in EBC Redstuff™ Brake Pads
EBC brake pads are now mostly self bedding. The Ultimax2, Greenstuff, Redstuff, and Yellowstuff compound grades come with a brake-in coating that scrubs the rotor surface, accelerates pad seating times, and provides a strong brake effect for the first 100 miles of use as the brake pads seat themselves. After the first 100 miles or so, unless you are going to drive aggressively, there is nothing more to do meaning – most drivers happily use and enjoy their brake’s excellent performance for tens of thousands of miles after this point. If that’s your way of driving, nothing more needs to be explained. Just enjoy your brakes.
Fast street driving
If you drive aggressively or in a “Spirited” fashion on roads where it is safe to do so, after seating the pads to your rotors and certainly not before 300 miles of use , you should be prepared for the brake pad to emit an odour or even exhibit some smoke as the pads burn off what EBC call “surface volatiles”.
Many faster drivers experience this in harder braking and criticize the brake pad whereas in fact, this is only part of the final high-end bedding-in process as the pads see rotors temps of 400-500C for the first time (not normal in everyday driving).
Once seated, any organic brake pad made by EBC performs better once the pad goes through heat curing or what EBC call “Green Fade” which happens during its first severe use. The green fade point is 400C/650F. There are two ways to know if you have passed the green fade point – one is via the use of heat paints, the second way is to guess. So heat paints are the better option.
You should drive with caution until bedded flat and you have passed this green fade point at least twice and then allowed the brake pads to cool so the disc is below 100C.
EBC Redstuff is NOT recommended for track use and self seats during the first 100-150 miles of street driving. With new pads and especially when fitted with new rotors, drive cautiously for the first 300-400 miles during which time dust will reduce and the pads will feel better and better.
